I began learning Japanese in 2020 during the global pandemic. What started as a casual interest quickly grew into a genuine passion. Fast forward to today, and I am still in the process of learning.
One thing I have realized is that mastering a new language takes much more than I initially anticipated. While I expected the challenges of vocabulary, grammar, and handwriting to be the most demanding aspects, the reality became more complicated as adult responsibilities took over in my life. Finding time to study Japanese became increasingly difficult.
Despite these challenges, this journey has taught me important lessons about myself, patience, and perseverance. Learning a language is not just about mastering grammar and vocabulary; it’s about embracing the process and growing through the ups and downs along the way.
The Struggle
The temptation to give up on my dream of speaking another language does find its way into my thoughts, now and then. Yet, I recognize the importance of persevering and maximizing my youth and time. I am in the early stages of learning Japanese and am just wrapping up my study of Hiragana. To help these symbols stick in my memory, I have been reciting them repeatedly. However, I often find myself feeling frustrated, particularly when I struggle to write a word using a syllable symbol I recently memorized. It’s disheartening to realize that I’ve just learned the symbol, only to feel lost when trying to apply it.
Another challenge I face is managing my other responsibilities. While I appreciate the advantage of being young and having time, I mean that in the sense of longevity. My days are largely consumed by a full-time job that takes up about eight hours. By the time I finish work, exhaustion often takes over, making it easy to slip into slacking off, a habit I really dislike. I mention this to illustrate how my current struggles are impacting both my well-being and my ability to focus on studying Japanese.
Learning a new language is no small feat. The frustrations of learning and forgetting words, the feeling of being overwhelmed, and the temptation to give up are challenges I encounter daily. However, this chapter of my life is teaching me invaluable lessons that extend far beyond just mastering the Japanese language.
The Shift: Patience & Persistence
Patience is often described as a virtue, a saying that has echoed throughout my life, though I never truly understood its significance until now. Learning Japanese has shown me that mastering a language demands a great deal of patience. Whether the goal is to enhance social connections or unlock new career opportunities, this process is a journey that requires time and dedication.
I have developed a newfound respect for the language and the culture it represents, learning to appreciate the importance of taking things one step at a time. This journey has proven to be incredibly rewarding, becoming a source of happiness for me. I’ve found joy in celebrating the small victories along the way. Recently, while watching Japanese variety shows and following the subtitles of my favorite YouTubers from Japan, I noticed that I could recognize some Hiragana characters and understand their meanings. This realization marks a significant milestone compared to where I was five years ago.
I’ve come to understand that achieving fluency isn’t a race; rather, it is a gradual process that reflects my commitment to learning and mirrors the challenges I face in life. Each step forward is a testament to my growth and perseverance.
Final Thought
This language learning journey is an opportunity to be kind to myself in the face of life’s challenges. Pursuing a goal or realizing a dream is no small feat. It requires not only dedication but also patience, qualities that extend beyond the study itself and into every aspect of life. If you have a vision or aspiration, I encourage you to stay persistent and cultivate a patient mindset. Approach your goals directly, but remember to show yourself grace along the way. This applies not only to yourself but also to the goals you are striving to achieve.
I look forward to continuing my journey of learning Japanese and am excited to see where it will lead me. Hopefully, I will continue to document this journey to inspire young minds for years to come.
