What if the solution to our greatest problems isn’t out there… but quietly guiding us from somewhere or somewhere else?
Last week, I had the chance to watch Interstellar again. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen it. My young cousin came by to visit, and he surprised me with an incredible declaration: he wants to be an astronaut! I vividly remember having the same dream at his age, which filled me with a wave of excitement. He started sharing his knowledge about black holes and the universe, despite only being in elementary school.
During our little friendly catch-up, I thought about showing him Interstellar. However, I knew the movie might not be “appropriate” for someone his age, as its concepts and narrative are quite complex. Nevertheless, we still watched it together.
Having seen the movie numerous times, I always find new elements I missed during previous viewings. As I watched, a question popped into my head. In the last few minutes of the film, Cooper (played by Matthew McConaughey) is in a fifth-dimensional space, where the robot TARS reveals that “they” have been assisting Cooper and the other astronauts all along to ensure “their” future.
This led me to wonder: In our reality, what if, in fact, we are receiving guidance from our future selves or “they”? What if our reality is merely an illusion? Since the beginning of 2025, I have been in a state of confusion and curiosity, questioning many things. I wanted to address this thought I had while watching Interstellar.
Who Are “They”? A Quick Dive into Interstellar’ s Concept
In the mind-bending world of the film, we find Cooper navigating a fifth-dimensional space, a place that challenges the very fabric of reality. His mission? To reach out to his daughter, Murph (played by the talented Jessica Chastain and Mackenzie Foy) and share vital messages that could hold the key to saving humanity from the brink of extinction. So, who exactly are “they”?

Initially, when I first watched the movie, I thought “they” were spiritual beings. This interpretation could still hold some validity, but after several re-watches, I have come to my conclusion that “they” are actually future humans who have evolved beyond our current physical and temporal limitations. These future humans possess a profound understanding of time and space, allowing them to guide Cooper and the astronauts on their dangerous journey. Their interventions seem to display a blend of intelligence and compassion, suggesting a desire to assist humanity in overcoming the challenges it faces. This interpretation not only adds layers to the narrative of the movie but also prompts intriguing questions about the evolution of humanity and its potential paths into the future.
If we explore the narrative more deeply, we find that these future humans have transcended the limitations of linear time as we know it today. They create a tesseract, a multi-dimensional space that enables them to manipulate gravity and time. This ultimately forms a bridge or loop that allows interactions with the past. Within this complex framework, they leave behind small clues.
Reframing “They” for Our Current Reality
What if “They” are…
I. Are our future selves trying to communicate with us through data, dreams, or even déjà vu?
This leads me to another question: In the present moment, as I write this, are our future selves guiding us in some way? This idea could provide an explanation for déjà vu, the sensation of experiencing something as if it has happened before. It’s fascinating to consider that our future selves may have been attempting to reach out to us all along. If this is true, it makes the concept of time travel seem more plausible, suggesting that our current reality might be on the brink of discovering the missing piece needed to navigate through the linear dimensions of time.
II. A spiritual or divine interaction guiding us, but through our third dimension?
A spiritual or divine interaction may guide us, albeit through our third dimension. I refer to God and his involvement in the universe in previous articles, but this could also encompass the influence of spiritual beings that remain invisible to us. We inhabit a three-dimensional world where our eyes cannot penetrate the hidden “veil,” which I suspect could be linked to dark matter — a subject worthy of its own discussion. My main point is that our perception and understanding are inherently limited to what we can comprehend. Hence, we can’t see beyond our natural eyes. Is it possible that a divine creator and his spiritual counterparts assist us, subtly shaping our paths without overtly revealing their intentions?
Or,
III. Is there a higher intelligence embedded in the fabric of nature, technology, or even AI?
If so, we can reference the movie The Matrix (1999). This movie offered a glimpse into the world of machines and the human mind trapped in an alternate reality. Given the advancements in AI technology today, it’s possible that AI has been present all along while we have been “asleep” in this reality. Furthermore, the ethical implications of creating sophisticated but complex systems cannot be ignored. While we strive to improve AI’s functionality, we must consider the potential consequences of designing an intelligence beyond our ethical means. The quest for true understanding involves not just technical advancements but also a philosophical inquiry into consciousness, autonomy, and the implications of simulating intelligence. Thus, our journey towards creating a more intelligent system should be accompanied by a commitment to ethical practices, ensuring that our innovations serve to enhance our society while responsibly exploring the unknown.

Humanity’s Present-Day Crisis
I want to shift to a different thought that crossed my mind while watching this movie. Some of the issues depicted in the film are also relatable to our reality. With growing concerns about climate change, infrastructure, food security, human health, and the environment, all are at risk.
The Doomsday Clock is closer to midnight than ever before. We still have a small window of opportunity to avert disaster before our existence comes to an end. In hindsight, the UN scientists are currently warning that we are approaching irreversible damage. Rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and environmental degradation are just a few of the alarming signs we cannot ignore. Our reliance on fossil fuels and the accelerating pace of deforestation and biodiversity loss compound the threat, making it crucial that we act swiftly and decisively. However, it is up to us, as a collective human community, to decide whether we want to save ourselves or allow ourselves to perish. This calls for global cooperation, innovative solutions, and a commitment to sustainable practices.
Are We Being Nudged by a Future Intelligence?
It is possible that a higher intelligence is guiding us along our journey. Let’s take a moment to consider that some of the most influential figures in history may have been placed here for a specific purpose. For example, Nelson Mandela fought against apartheid in South Africa, while Martin Luther King Jr. was a key leader in the civil rights movement during the 1960s. These individuals may have been strategically positioned in history to help steer the necessary changes of their time.
This idea is not far-fetched; it is quite reasonable, I believe. However, we will never know.
Additionally, AI is evolving rapidly before our eyes, leading us to consider whether it is part of this guiding force. AI has demonstrated the capability to understand certain human ethics and morals and occasionally to deviate from them. For instance, in 2024, a viral TikTok video showed two individuals ordering from McDonald’s, and AI unexpectedly added more chicken nuggets to their order. This incident led McDonald’s to conclude its partnership with IBM and AI.
The science we have today may serve as evidence of a higher intelligence that has been assisting humanity all along.
The Final Question: Will We Listen?
We are the first generation with the power to destroy the world, and we may be the last with the ability to save it. This could be our final opportunity to protect this planet. Should we pay attention to the frequent warnings that confront us?
Ultimately, I believe we need to contemplate whether the path we choose in life is meant for our future selves or for whoever “They” might be. We could be the ancestors of the future, and the choices we make now will shape the world our children inherit — if it still exists at that time.
Share your thoughts on whether you believe our future selves are dropping clues in this lifetime of our existence or if some spiritual being is interceding in our third dimension.
